GRUEL

I ALWAYS USED to wonder what gruel was. I imagined a thin broth ng of tripey water, but thickened with dust or wood chippings. reading my Dickens it seemed that it must have been a cruel culinary torture aimed at securing the social order. I was upset to find that it’s actually quite pleasant. It’s a kind of sweetly spicy porridgy mess. I’ve used a splash of brandy, sugar and a piece of orange peel, all of which would presumably have been reserved for the evil beadle back in the workhouse, but were common in recipes of the day. If I couldn’t afford better, I’d definitely be happy to tuck into a bowl of it, especially after tilling the land all day. My two-year-old daughter was very happy eating it, but hard as I tried, I couldn’t get her to look me rebelliously in the eye and say, ‘Please Sir, I want some more’.
